Major Peyton Mathis, Jr.

Many Alabamians lost their lives while serving their country during World War II, including Major Peyton Mathis, Jr. In 1944, due to engine failure, Mathis' plane crashed into a swamp in the Battle of Guadalcanal, where it stayed for almost seventy years. In 2015 Mathis' remains were finally recovered, brought home, and  laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery. [5]
