John Dowe
Born in Cork, Ireland on November 11, 1818, John Dowe immigrated to the United States, and to Montgomery, sometime in the 1830s or 1840s. Upon arriving in Montgomery, Dowe opened a combination grocery store and bakery. Dowe's business thrived until the Civil War. Although nearly financially ruined by the conflict, Dowe's finances recovered and he died a rich man in 1877. [8] The Dowe family plot in Oakwood Cemetery conveys the amount of wealth John Dowe and the Dowe family possessed.
Note: The John Dowe Collection, a collection of research about the history of the Dowe family, compiled by John Dowe, the grandson of the orginial John Dowe, is housed at the Montgomery County Archives in Montgomery, Alabama.
