Oakwood Cemetery

Oakwood Cemetery's founding predates  Montgomery County's. By 1810, people began burying the deceased in the area that would eventually become Oakwood. In 1818, Andrew Dexter, a founder of Montgomery, sold or gave the northeast quarter of section 7, Township 16, Range 18, to General John Scott, also a founder of Montgomery. Scott added five and one-third acres to the land Dexter transferred to him and Oakwood formally became a cemetery. In 1847, 1848, 1850, 1855, and 1863, Oakwood expanded through various land transactions including purchases and donations. [7]  Thousand of people were buried in Oakwood and Oakwood Annex, including country musician Hank Williams, prominant pre-and post-Civil War local merchant John Dowe, and notable late eighteenth-early nineteenth century African-American businessman Victor Tulane.
